The business was growing and his fleet consisted of 15 trucks in 1965. Hence, in 1956, he sold his car and bought a Ford truck. Starting the Werner Enterprises BusinessĬlarence always had an inclination towards driving trucks. That’s when the idea of driving his own truck struck him. Married and the father of a son, he needed to supplement his income. In 1955, at the age of 18, Clarence went to find work in a steel foundry in Omaha as the income from the farm was proving to be insufficient. After coming home from school, Clarence and his siblings helped their parents with domestic chores. ![]() The main sources of income were dairy and farm products. Everyone in the family worked very hard to keep the stoves burning. He learned to drive as early as 7 years and was driving small pickup trucks by the time he was 10. But the Werner family showed an indomitable spirit and battled the crises.įrom a remarkably young age, Clarence showed a propensity towards driving.
